DENVER, Colo. (247marketnews.com) -- AEye (NASDAQ:LIDR) is taking its lidar technology somewhere considerably more ambitious than the highway: the Moon. The company announced that its Apollo long-range lidar has been selected by Lunar Outpost for integration onto the Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle, the rover NASA selected in 2026 to support Artemis astronauts at the lunar South Pole. The multi-million-dollar commercial engagement marks AEye’s entry into the space-mobility market and potentially gives the small-cap lidar developer exposure to a new category tied to the long-term buildout of lunar infrastructure. Lunar Outpost says Pegasus is scheduled to launch in 2028 and is intended to support exploration, science, resource prospecting and site preparation.
Lunar Outpost selected Apollo for its solid-state design, compact footprint and software-defined architecture, which allows sensing characteristics such as scan patterns and performance to be adapted through software. On the Moon, where vacuum, extreme temperatures, vibration and the absence of an opportunity for field repair create an unforgiving operating environment, reliability and perception are not optional features. Apollo is expected to support Pegasus with terrain perception, obstacle detection and autonomous-navigation capabilities. AEye CEO Matt Fisch called the contract “a testament to our technology and its ability to address this significant market opportunity,” while describing the lunar environment as “the most demanding proving ground any sensor can face.”
For LIDR, the timing also adds another piece to an increasingly diversified commercial story. AEye reported in August that second-quarter revenue approximately doubled sequentially and increased roughly nine-fold year over year, while first-half revenue exceeded its full-year 2025 revenue. The company also highlighted Apollo’s validation on NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor, a third consecutive purchase order from its lead defense customer and expansion into sports analytics. The Lunar Outpost win now adds space mobility to a portfolio spanning automotive, defense, industrial and other applications.
Lunar Outpost says Pegasus is part of a broader effort toward sustained human activity at the Moon’s South Pole, while its own mission roadmap calls for 10 lunar missions before 2030. Lunar Outpost Chief Strategy Officer Forrest Meyen said, “As Lunar Outpost works to establish a sustained human presence at the Moon’s South Pole, we need partners who can scale with us.”
