Exchange invests ~$300M annually and runs 100+ AI models to anticipate, detect, and intervene against AI-driven fraud

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume and registered users, today detailed how it is embedding artificial intelligence across its global compliance and risk operations to keep pace with a financial-crime landscape that AI itself is accelerating.

Scams have grown more personalized, more scalable, and harder to detect, with deepfakes, impersonation schemes, phishing bots, and synthetic identities moving from fringe threats to mainstream attack methods. In 2025, impersonation tactics surged 1,400% year-over-year across the industry as attackers used AI to automate and scale fraud, according to Binance Research. In response, Binance says traditional systems built on static rules and manual review are no longer sufficient on their own, and that compliance must evolve alongside the threat.

Compliance as a Core Operational Commitment

By the end of 2025, Binance's compliance-related headcount reached approximately 1,500 employees - roughly a quarter of the company's global workforce - backed by $300 million in annual investment. The company now operates more than 24 AI initiatives and over 100 AI models across compliance and risk functions, supporting onboarding, due diligence, scam detection, escalation routing, and anti-fraud monitoring.

Rather than replacing compliance professionals, the company positions AI as a "force multiplier" that triages cases, identifies patterns across large datasets, and routes higher-risk activity to human reviewers more quickly. In risk operations, AI systems now support more than 80% of anti-fraud and anti-scam decisioning workflows and assist in roughly 45% of human review processes.

From Static Rules to Contextual Detection

Binance noted that financial crime rarely looks obvious today, with risks emerging through subtle sequences of actions that appear harmless in isolation but become meaningful when viewed together. In peer-to-peer environments, for example, fund flows may appear legitimate until additional context - device signals, behavioral patterns, interaction history, or account activity - is layered in. Internal systems such as Binance's "Strategy Factory" allow compliance teams to continuously refine detection models as threats evolve.

From 2025 through Q1 2026, the company's enhanced detection systems helped prevent approximately $10.53 billion in potential user losses.

Identity Verification at AI Scale

Around 80% of attacks against Binance involve some form of KYC-related fraud, with methods evolving from static image spoofing to deepfake videos, synthetic identities, and AI-generated documentation. To counter this, Binance continuously evolves its Face Attack Detection and Liveness Detection systems. The company says its AI-supported KYC process — combining automated analysis with human review - now operates at approximately 100:1 efficiency compared with fully manual review.

Recovery and Post-Incident Response

In 2025, Binance conducted more than 36,000 voice calls to users identified as potentially at risk, pairing AI-powered detection with direct human outreach. Recovery efforts helped recover or freeze approximately $114 million linked to external hacks in 2025, with an additional $60.2 million recovered or frozen so far in 2026.

Across 2025 and into 2026, the company recovered $17 million in scam-related proceeds tied to accounts belonging to more than 80,000 victims, processed roughly 1.28 million user appeals, and recovered $8.2 billion in cryptocurrencies mistakenly sent by users. Between 2023 and 2025, Binance supported law-enforcement investigations that led to more than $715 million in asset seizures.

Building AI Responsibly

In 2025, Binance implemented a global AI strategy aligned with emerging frameworks such as the EU AI Act and earned ISO 42001 certification for AI management and governance. The company maintains a portfolio of 25 international certifications, which it describes as one of the most comprehensive security and compliance frameworks in the industry.
