Splash Beverage’s Exclusive Global CannEpil Deal Signals Bold Shift into Biopharmaceuticals

DENVER, Colo. (247marketnews.com) -- Splash Beverage Group (NYSEAMERICAN:SBEV) is making a dramatic strategic pivot, moving beyond beverages with the acquisition of exclusive worldwide rights to CannEpil®, an investigational cannabinoid-based therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). The licensing agreement with Argent BioPharma positions the company to participate in the growing cannabinoid therapeutics market while leveraging an asset that already has international patient access, regulatory engagement, and a potential pathway toward U.S. clinical development.

Unlike many early-stage biotechnology programs, CannEpil has already been prescribed through regulated patient-access frameworks in several countries, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. Manufactured under European Union Good Manufacturing Practice (EU-GMP) standards, the therapy has gained reimbursement-supported access in Ireland through the Medicinal Cannabis Access Program (MCAP) and has been available to eligible patients in the United Kingdom through specialist treatment pathways.

The opportunity addresses a significant unmet medical need. Roughly 30% of epilepsy patients continue to experience seizures despite currently available medications, leaving millions worldwide with drug-resistant epilepsy. Cannabinoid-based therapies have drawn increasing attention in neurology following regulatory approvals of certain cannabis-derived medicines for specific seizure disorders, making this an area of continued pharmaceutical and investor interest.

Splash also highlighted that CannEpil has already begun engagement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration through the pre-Investigational New Drug (pre-IND) process and has received an IND number, providing an early regulatory foundation for future U.S. clinical development. To support those efforts, the company announced a $1 million strategic investment commitment from C/M Capital Partners, which management intends to use for regulatory advancement, clinical planning, commercialization initiatives, and potential pharmaceutical partnerships.

The transaction substantially reshapes Splash's business strategy. Rather than focusing solely on consumer beverages, the company is positioning itself as a cannabinoid health, wellness, and biopharmaceutical platform. The agreement grants Splash exclusive global commercialization rights for 20 years, including rights to future product improvements and the ability to sublicense the technology to pharmaceutical partners worldwide.

Investors should recognize that while CannEpil has achieved international commercialization milestones and early FDA engagement, U.S. approval remains subject to the clinical development process and regulatory review. Future commercial success will depend on continued development, clinical data, regulatory outcomes, and execution of the company's commercialization strategy.

Even so, the acquisition reflects a notable transformation. By securing rights to a later-stage cannabinoid therapeutic with existing international utilization, Splash Beverage is seeking to transition from a consumer products company into a participant in the evolving cannabinoid biopharmaceutical market—a move that could significantly alter its long-term growth profile if successfully executed.
